How do hurricanes cause beach erosion?

As a hurricane approaches the shore, the winds drive the ocean water toward the shore, resulting in an influx of water that's called the storm surge. For a severe hurricane, this can be as much as a 15-20 foot increase in the normal sea level. The churning waves then stir up the sand on the beach and, when the storm surge recedes, it carries the sand away with it.
